What are sulfates?

Sulfates are commonly used as surfactants that provide cleansing by trapping dirt and oils so that they can be rinsed away with water. They are the ingredient that creates the foamy lather you get when you brush your teeth or wash your hair or face. In rare cases, certain sulfates can irritate some skin types, which is why you might have heard or read about an increase in sulfate-free products.

Not all sulfates are created equal. Through our research, we identified mild sulphates (“ethoxylated sulphates”) that are powerfully effective, yet gentle. We use SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) in our products. It is a surfactant which creates lather and gives that ‘clean feel’, often confused with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), which is known to cause irritation. SLES is a milder surfactant than SLS and is more suitable for beauty products as it’s kinder to skin.

Contrary to some Internet rumors, sulfates are proven to be safe and effective.

What are silicones?

Silicones are derived from silica, one of the most common elements in the earth’s crust and has been taming hair for nearly 50 years.

WHAT ARE PHTHALATES

Phthalates are a group of materials that were historically used in cosmetics for three purposes: to improve fragrance performance, improve longevity of films such as nail polishes and hairsprays, and as a denaturant in alcohol to help prevent accidental ingestion by children.

our fragrance philosophy

Our fragrance philosophy places great importance on research, analysis, assessment and transparency. Our in-house team of experts is dedicated to creating fragrances that can be enjoyed safely. That’s why our formulations are compliant and backed by safety data and meet the guidelines of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).

our product safety

We set the highest standards to ensure every material and finished formula not only meets industry standards for purity, quality and performance, but that we constantly evaluate and refine our formulas based on emerging science to ensure they are safe for your hair and safe for the environment.

ANIMAL WELFARE

We know you love animals and so do we!  That’s why all the John Frieda products are cruelty-free.  We do not test our products or the materials within them on animals.  We follow the conventions of the EU and other governmental bans on animal testing for cosmetics.  Occasionally, laws and regulations require testing of materials outside of the cosmetics category. Since the 1980's Kao Corporation has been actively working together with industry associations and relevant third parties to find robust alternatives to animal testing, which have been successfully adopted as international guidelines.
