Hair masks are great for giving you healthy-looking hair, whether your strands need a little TLC or a deeply-hydrating moisture boost. No matter what your hair needs, we’ve got an array of hair masks for all hair types and all hair concerns.

What is a hair mask?

A hair mask is basically a thick, powerful hair conditioner which acts as a short-term treatment. You need to leave it on your hair for a little longer than your usual conditioner to benefit from its nourishing properties, and we’d recommend that you only apply it to your lengths and ends.

How to use a hair mask

Hair masks are easy to use. The first thing you need to do is wash your hair, as wet hair’s more porous, and will absorb the mask more easily. You can also condition your hair as normal before you apply the hair mask; we’d recommend you do this if your hair’s especially dry, and rinse out the conditioner as usual before applying the hair mask.

Apply the hair mask to damp hair, gently massaging it into the mid-lengths and ends of your hair in a downward motion for 30 seconds. Start with a small amount, then if you need to you can always apply more. Leave the mask on for 3-5 minutes for your hair to soak up all the goodness from the mask. Once you’re ready to remove your mask, rinse your hair thoroughly, dry it and style as usual.

If you’ve got thick hair, you could also add a spray-in leave in conditioner to detangle, fight frizz and add an extra boost of moisture.

Choosing the right hair mask for your hair type

Different hair masks will affect your hair in different ways, depending on your natural hair type. If you’ve got fine or thin hair and you notice your hair feels greasy or heavy after using a hair mask, you’re probably using a product that’s too rich for your strands. If your hair is bleached or dyed, a rehydrating hair mask might be best.

How often you should use a hair mask will also depend on your hair type. If you have dry hair, you could use a hair mask up to twice a week, whereas if your hair is finer, then once a week should be enough.
